Just the page. Everything else waits.

justwrite app icon

justwrite is a Markdown writing app for your Mac with no permanent sidebar. Your words sit in the middle of a quiet window, files and commands appear only when you ask, and every document stays a plain file on your disk.

Free beta for Apple silicon · Version 0.2.0 · About 17 MB

Shown in the sepia theme, with light and dark behind it.

Three ways to stay in the sentence.

Turn any of them on from the keyboard, and off again when you want the whole page back.

Typewriter

Command Shift T

The line you are writing stays at the top, middle, or bottom of the window while the text scrolls past it.

Focus

Command Shift F

Everything outside the current line fades back, so the sentence in progress is the only thing at full strength.

Clean Mode

From the palette

Markdown punctuation hides while you write and comes back when the cursor is inside a heading.

Your writing is files, not a database.

justwrite reads and writes ordinary Markdown in the folder you choose. Open the same files in any other editor, sync them however you like, and leave whenever you want.

  • Version history lives in a hidden .justwrite folder and never touches a Git repository you keep yourself.
  • If sync software or another editor changes a file, justwrite offers Compare, Reload, or an explicit Overwrite.
  • Deleted documents go to Recently Deleted, where you can recover them.
  • Tables, footnotes, and pasted images are plain Markdown too; images are saved in an assets folder beside your writing.
  • Compile the folder into one Word file in standard manuscript format, ready to send.
  • Chapters
  • 01.mdMarkdown
  • 02.mdMarkdown
  • Reference Notes.mdMarkdown
  • Quick Capture.mdControl Option Space
  • .justwriteversion history

The sidebar is a keystroke away.

A command palette replaces the file tree. Press Command / in the app for the full keyboard reference.

Help when you ask. Silence when you do not.

AI is disabled by default, and writing never depends on it. Connect an endpoint in Preferences and each feature sends its context only when you use it.

⌘ J

Sounding Board

Talk through an idea in a panel beside the draft.

Ghost text

Ask for the next few lines. Tab accepts them, Esc rejects them.

⌘ ⇧ R

Structural Review

Critiques structure, pacing, and repetition. Nothing is sent until you press Run review.

Requests go directly from the app to the endpoint you configure, not through a justwrite server. The app asks before it uses any new endpoint, and your API key stays in the system keychain. Point it at a model running on your Mac and nothing leaves the computer; the Sounding Board shows Local or Remote before you send. Use only providers you trust.

A writing app has to earn your manuscript. This beta is where that starts.

justwrite is free during the beta, with no account or license key, in exchange for honest feedback: where the page stays quiet, where you hesitate, and anything that did not save the way you expected.

Windows and Linux (experimental): Windows installer (11 MB, SHA-256) · Linux .deb (16 MB, SHA-256) · Linux AppImage (93 MB, SHA-256). These pass the same automated tests as the Mac app but have not yet been tried by a person. The Windows installer is not code-signed, so Windows will warn before it runs.

Before you start

Say the sentence before you type it.

Clarify is fully offline push-to-talk dictation. Hold one chord, speak naturally, and clean text lands at your cursor in the app where you are already writing. Your speech never leaves the Mac.
