Free beta for Mac
Try Clarify on a real sentence.
This beta is for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. The installer is signed, Apple-notarized, and about 1.3 GB because both dictation models are included. Speech recognition runs on the Neural Engine, cleanup runs on the GPU, and your speech never leaves the Mac.
Install
- Download the beta DMG and open it.
- Drag Clarify to Applications, then launch that copy. Clarify lives in the menubar.
- Getting Started walks you through Microphone, Input Monitoring, and Accessibility, one screen each. Each permission has a separate job.
- The first time you say "Run" with a shortcut's name, macOS asks once whether Clarify may control Shortcuts. Allow it to run shortcuts by voice.
- Help > Check for Updates… finds newer betas, so you can stay on the latest one. Automatic checks stay off until you turn them on in Settings > General. A check contacts clarifyfor.me and GitHub, which see your IP address and Clarify's version. Until the first update is published, it reports that it could not find one.
- If macOS blocks the app, record the exact message. Do not disable Gatekeeper or remove quarantine attributes.
First useful test
Open TextEdit with a disposable document. Hold Right Command + Right Option, speak one sentence, and release. The cleaned sentence should appear once at the cursor. Try a browser text field and your usual writing app next.
For longer dictation, tap the chord once to start and tap it again to stop.
Things worth trying
- “Quick note: remember to call home.” saves a note instead of pasting it.
- “New paragraph.” in its own capture inserts a paragraph break.
- “New checklist buy milk next item call home end list that is all.” creates two checklist items, then returns to prose.
- “Open Clarify settings.” opens the Settings window.
- “Scratch that.” on its own presses Undo in that app, which removes your last dictation there. If you edited after dictating, the edit may be undone instead.
- “Press Return.” on its own presses Return in the app you're in, for example to send a chat message.
- “Run shortcut name.” runs one of your Apple Shortcuts in the background, and your app keeps focus. A shortcut that asks you a question or shows a menu may need to be run from the Shortcuts app instead.
Known limits
- Review important text. Dates inside longer sentences or several dates together can still be misread.
- Fn or Globe capture is not supported. Use Right Command and Right Option.
- Compatibility across macOS versions, microphones, and third-party editors is still being tested.
- Successful audio and transcripts are not retained by default. Failed sessions keep available recovery files on your Mac.
